DCPA Member in the Spotlight

DCPA Sustaining Member – Janel Stoffels

By 2015 DCPA President, Cheryl Cooper

Many of you already know DCPA sustaining member, Janel Stoffels.  For those of you who don’t, Janel has been a long standing supporter of DCPA as a member, local business owner, court reporter, and friend.

Personal

Janel was born and raised in Muenster, Texas.  She was one of 10 children.  Janel has lived in Denton since 1972.  She moved to Denton to become a typesetter for the Denton Record-Chronicle and to attend what was known back then as NTSU.  Janel is married to Glen.  She has 2 stepsons and 1 step-grandson.  When time permits, they enjoy traveling.  Janel has a brother, nephew, and 3 cousins who are also court reporters.  It must run in the family.  J

Professional

In 1976, Janel decided to become a court reporter.  She graduated from Chapman Court Reporting College in Ft. Worth in 1977.  Janel then began working as an official court reporter in Denton, and also worked as a freelance court reporter.  In 1981, Janel moved to San Antonio to become the official court reporter for the 290th District Court.  Interestingly, Janel worked in London, England reporting in the Royal Courts of Justice (including covering depositions) in 1987.  Personally, I’d love to hear Janel’s stories about this unique experience.  In 1988, Janel moved back to this area and opened Stoffels & Associates, Inc.  During her long tenure, Janel has trained and worked with many court reporters.  She has enjoyed the challenges and rewards associated with her work.

Association with DCPA

Janel has been a member of DCPA since 2008.  She enjoys participating as a sustaining member and sponsor for what she terms “a great association.”

At our last Christmas party in December of 2014, Janel provided gifts for each member:  a glass pickle ornament (with story enclosed).  At our TAPA seminar and conference in April of 2015, Janel provided festive goody bags for each attendee – full of candy and other fun swag.  Janel also agreed to sponsor one of our breaks at TAPA at a cost of $250.00.  She was provided an opportunity, as a sponsor, to speak to our attendees at the conference.  We so appreciate Janel’s generosity and her willingness to go above and beyond as a member of DCPA and a vital contributor and member of our legal community.

Just think of what we all could do if we got acquainted with each other a little better and were inspired and encouraged to do even better things in our personal and professional lives.  If you know of a member who should be highlighted, please let me know so we can feature them on our website and Facebook page.

that we are happy to do it.”  -Mother Teresa
